Don't know what the problem is for you guys. No spark is difinitely an issue. Have you tried new wires? Whenever I've read about these kinds of no-start issues, I've also read as the remedy, pushing the accelerator down all the way and cranking the starter for up to a minute. I know this sounds long but it works much of the time. If not, could be the battery is just shy of having enough crank volts.

Well this morning I took the car to my mechanic (same guy I bought it off). He did 5 free hours of labor, and said it's not the fuel pump or the relay.
He cleaned out the throttle body, but that was not the problem.
Tomorrow I am dropping off the car again, and he is taking it to a Volvo "specialist or guru".
I will post an update.
PS I took it to a different Volvo specialist that my old mechanic suggested, 150.00$ CDN just to open the hood, I don't think so!
Let ya know whats up...

I got a '94 Volvo 850 and I had the same problem when I got the car, sometimes it wouldn't start or it would stall at me while driving and would start for some time. Sometimes it would start after few minutes some times it would be next day, it turned out to be EGR VALVE POSITION SENSOR, it was about $200 CND. Ever since i replaced it i haven't had a problem, about three months now. But yesterday it overheated on me, I live in Toronto area, and i was stuck in traffic, and the temperature gage went all the way up almost to the red line. I guess I'll take out the thermostat for now to see if it helps, I had the same problem with all of my 740s (btw RWD Volvo rocks
)

Well, there's a small leak in the intake gasket. Due process until they can make an accurate diagnosis.
One small thing at a time, here we go.
They could not repeat the problem today. It rained. Go figure.
I repeat. It does not restart only when the temperature is hot and the car is hot. It has never cut out while being drivin.
I have the car back for the weekend. Dropping it back off on Monday to let him fix the small leak in the intake gasket. From there he will take it back to his "guy", to start over. IF that guy can repeat the problem.
Small note, washer fluid wouldn't shoot out, so I put some in, and it would barely go down. Drove a bit, still no liquid coming out, 20 minutes later arriving at home and in my driveway, I press it and squirt squirt, clean windsheild.

After struggling with the car for a week, without being able to start it, I had it towed to the dealers workshop. It was sitting there for almost a week (due to holydays) before they started working on it. And guess what.... it started first time they turned the key. Damn!
Having told them about all my effort and findings, the decided to replace the fly wheel sensor, as a new one measured different from the old one. They said it should measure 180 Ohms and 400-600mV while cranked. Mine didn't measure any resistance and it only produced about 300mV during cranking. They couldn't provoke any staling, and believed problem solved. They also said there wasn't any code set, when the tried to read it.
Took the car home, and the problem soon re-occurred, but in a more "smooth" manner. After car was left untouched for 2 days, I can't start it at all again. Back to zero.
Just measured on the two leads to the ignition coil. They are both having constant 12V when key is pos. #2 or #3, but no spark evident when rigged up with a separate plug????? But why? Are ther no guru's reading this forum.

Forgot to mention I tried the trick (suggested by MadeInJapan) pushing the accelerator all the way down and cranked the starter for over 2 minutes using 3 ea 12V batteries in parallel. Yeah,.... you know the answer. Did NOT spring on

Latest in the Nordic "Wont Start"-saga:
Took fuel pump out. Looked and pumped like new. Tank absolutely clean. Reassembled. Still no go.
Jacked car up quite a bit on the RH side to access fuel filter. Pried off discharge and attached a hose to filter and down in a bucket. Turned key in pos. #2 several times and found filter NOT to be blocked or restricted, as petrol was coming out plenty.
Reassembled fuel line and tuned key into pos.#2 a couple of times and observed a different behavior of fuel pump. Now there was air in the system, and I could hear the pump start/stop 2-3 times.
And....., finally when I turned the key all the way, the engine stared
. But why? What was different? Yes I know....I had it lifted. Same had happened when the car was towed and was able to start after that. Was this just coincidence? But it still doesn't make any sense at all.
Replaced the fly wheel sensor back to the old one and tried to start. No problem.
So played around with the car all day and the problem I am facing now, is that motor has regular small and very short cut-outs. Mostly while the accelerator is only gently pushed, but also while standing in idle.
Went to Volvo garage to get some advice, believing they also might think it was an idea to replace the fuel filter despite the good flow, but they didn't. They suggested rotor, distributer, ignition coil, cam shaft sensor or fuel pump. Make your pick. Where shall I start. I just don't get it. Why did it start after I messed around with the fuel filter

Clean out the Throttle Body again, and today he replaced the TPS/Throttle Position Sensor?
Still have the same problem.
Fuel pump is ok as well.
To be continued...
Well took it to the "specialist", the 150$ CDN to open the hood guy.
There were 16 codes found, all of them fixed and replaced by the volvo specialist, so no codes showing.
They said the car is good, nothing is wrong, no problems starting or re-starting or anything, big bill, good to go.
Picked the car up, started great, no sputter or stall. Turned it off, restart, no problem, drove around, off and on, no problems.
Until the temp reached 24C, then is stalled and wouldn't restart.
Now me, the mechanic, the volvo specialist, and another mechanic are clueless as to what the hell is going on.
Good news is though, did a complete car clean up, and it runs like it would new, much quicker as well.
Any ideas?
