Re: Nasty Engine

Post by Groatie-da-kid »

on my t6 wreck rebuild, i used engine brite gel, a die grinder wire wheel, vulcan blasted my intake, let the gel sit for twenty minutes on the whole motor and under carriage minus the turbo and alternator. Cleaned light grime with a scotch brite, then used the die grinder to clean scale and heavy build up, washed with light pressure water and blew it off with an airgun. the n painted my intake valve cover and face of the head with gloss black engine enamel, then i scuffed and painted the timing belt and spark plug cover volvo code 339 torch red metallic base clear. then wiped it down with a body shop safe cleaner.

Interesting idea. Any downside to doing this?

Not that I know of. I'd avoid spraying any of the metalic stuff but since it's a 50/50 mix, it's not going to be a huge problem.

OK... it works. I just got started, but this is the result so far.

Nice Job! Looks like you even rubbed the firewall heatshield with a rag to buff it up a bit?

Be careful with water and coils. They don't mix.

I know this is an older thread but someone asked about engine cleaning today and this was referenced as suggested reading. So, in order to keep everything cohesive I added my thoughts to this older thread instead of the newer one.

the 50/50 armor all mix is a great idea. I usually spray AA directly on after a good cleaning, but I like the mixing idea.

One cautionary note: Keep the Armor All away from your seperntine belt, alternator, etc. You don't want that surface polish on the belts, pulleys or fan motor.

dbm123's engine compartment looks amazing.

If your engine compartment is really neglected you will need some harsher cleaning. But if you want to maintain it and keep it looking like the above picture, regularly cleaning will work with milder cleaning. I use Simple Green. Its more environmentally friendly and much less harsh. I warm my engine slightly, turn it off (so there isn't air rushing around), spray Simple Green all over and especially on the dirty parts. I let this soak for 10 minutes, then restart the engine and blast everything with my power washer using the gentle wash nozzle.

Then I go back and spray all the electrical parts (not the motors or alternator) with WD-40 (its a water displacer, first and foremost). Then I spray my Armor All on and give it a wipe-down.

I made a 1/3 mixture of Armor All and water in an old spray bottle. Instead of my prior technique or spritz and wipe, I doused everything (except parts which shouldnt be sprayed obviously) and let it air dry. The results were terrific. The sheen was a little uneven until after a full day and some driving - which dried everything out evenly. There is no stickiness.

This is my 11 year old, 142000 mile engine compartment
