Volvo 850 1996 GLT - Odometer and speedometer stopped

Post by Jack_Inaboxx »

Hello everyone,

first of all thanks for all the tips that this board has given me, but now I just arrived at work and encountered an issue that I need to fix asap.

So basically, on the last 500m on my way to work, the odometer AND speedometer just spontaneously stopped working. Both just... aren't reading anything. I went around the block to see if something would happen, but nothing.

Now I am wondering if it is a gear issue - that only affects the odometer, or an ABS module issue - I have done a little bit of research.

Yes - the ABS check light is on, but only sporadically, mostly when I brake (but othertimes no). Other CEL include the oxygen sensor (lambda), but that is completely unrelated IMHO.

So my question is - what do you think it is? Should I repair/replace the ABS unit, go with the gear change, go for both, or something I didn't think about?

On a completely unrelated note - how many meters of vacuum tubing does one need to change the whole vacuum line in a non-turbo 850?

Thanks again,

-Jack-

Thanks a lot! I just needed to know if it was an ABS module problem or a odometer gear problem... just sent a message to Matty Moo on his ABS module repair site to get a shipping quote to Canada, now waiting for his reply.

Thanks again, now this should be a jiffy to fix.

I replaced my PNP a month ago and went through the air cleaner base too, as well as before cleaning up the PCV and IAC... I'm actually lucky I didn't break that part the first two times. Thanks for the heads up, and hope you got that fixed. Just ordered the fix from Matt... excited for it to come.

I'll post a follow-up the moment I send the defective ABS to the States.

Now here's a list of everything that I still need to do on it, in order:

- Change front catalytic oxygen sensor (for higher MPG, and get rid of all those dashboard warning lights :D)
- Change rear shocks (been pushing my steering left...)
- Return the used blower fan I bought because it started screeching as bad as the old one, and hope I get one that works this time.
- Adjust trunk and put the spoiler back on
- Replace vacuum lines
- Change dashboard/automatic transmission lights, and other cosmetic stuff.

Then at 200,000 km, timing/aux belt. Gah.
