Hello all
I have a 1996 850 GLT wagon. In cold whether I can't control the direction of warm air to the windshield by adjusting the knobs. there is very little air coming out of windshield defogger air holes and makes it difficult to drive for at least 30 min. and then when inside the car get warm the fog goes away but still there will be some . I know I have a problem with my, lets say air directional system. Will appreciate any advise if anybody had the same experience. Thanks.
Art.

Sorry no one else has responded to your question yet. I haven't had time to be on here for a while. I've just rebuilt the whole system for a similar problem on my 93 850GLT with ECC. There are a couple of problems you sould have. Do you have ECC or manual cables on your car heating system?
The normal problem if you have ECC (and it may be similar on the manual version) is there is a flap on the right side of the heating unit under the dashboard that breaks so although you move the posistion, the flap doesn't rotate. This can be repaired with some difficulty without dash removal. To check the operation, remove the under panel on the RHS of the dash. Look under hear and you should see the servo motors on the right side. The one further back is the culprit. It has an extension that extends outside the unit and this cracks with age. It has a square peg on the servo which turns inside the end of it and when it cracks the peg turns but the flap doesn't. The part is only about $10-15 from the dealer. It was a common fault. Just hope you don't have to replace the LH flap as it can't be bought separate (mine had melted and I had to buy a used unit to get a replacement).
You could try tightly wrapping a zip tie around the shaft and see if this helps. If it does, then you know the problem. Another common problen is the shaft on the main intake flap snaps. Part can also be replaced, but removing the glovebox helps here and probably the knee brace too. Good luck.
