Dual Climate Problem

Post by ronzara »

Hey guys, you've been right on the money helping with all my other issues,... Thought I'd throw this one at you,

My 97 850glt has dual climate control.

No matter how I set the controls, the drivers side dash vent blows hotter than the passengers side.

I don't have AC right now because of a busted line,... So I am talking just vent.

Maybe I am not operating it correctly but with both dials set at SAME degrees, the drivers side is hot air and the passengers side seems more accurate to the dial position.
I don't notice a change in the scenario in AUTO mode either...
Just seems like the drivers side is stuck on heat, although the lower temp settings ARE cooler than the higher settings, it's still VERY warm air coming out.
What would cause/cure this problem??

A couple of things come to mind and they are both related to the driver's side temperature damper flap. Chances are that either the motor has shelled out some teeth on the gear or the shaft that actuates the damper flap (via the motor) has a split in the socket.

In either case the motor needs to be removed so that the system can be inspected. It is fairly easy, remove the lower dash panel from the driver's side and then fold back the carpet along the center console. Once the carpet is folded back it will reveal a stiffener which is held in by one screw.

Remove the stiffener and then look up on the side of the climate unit to locate the motor. It is held in place by two screws as I recall.

My car is a 98 XC but I had a similar problem. If the A/C was on or the vent air, sometimes it would start to blow hot on its own.It was suggested by a person on this site that either the contacts on my temp switch were bad or the motor that drives the damper door.Turning the temp knob thru full cycles a couple or more times clears the problem up for awhile. One of these days I'll figure out if its the switch or something else.My linkage was ok but yours may not be since its hot all the time.
