My 96 960 cranks, but doesn't kick over.

Post by whitebulldog73 »

Hello all,

Like to say thank you mattew for the previous help on my 960 with transmission help. Since then, I put the car in a garage to put a used, low mileage tranny in. Before it got into the shop, it started to act up only running (the motor) for about a minute an stall. Now since the car is finished with the tranny swap at the garage, it would just crank, no fire. Could it be a low battery? I swapped out a ignition control unit on the intake manifold, cause i had number 5 cylinder not fireing, an we ruled out the coil. I hooked up a OBD II reader an got a code P1617= glow plug/heater indicator circ. open/short to ground. Two days ago it was trying to kick over, but wasn't responding to pumping of the gas pedal. Any insight and/or knowledge on this matter will be grately appreciated.

thank you

Jon

Code P1617 translates to Volvo code EFI335 which can mean on a diesel engine 'CAN data bus, wiring error'. However, on a petrol engine it means a problem with the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and is usually a wiring problem. As you have had the transmission replaced it would appear that the garage has made a mistake with the wiring.

Do you know what year car the replacement transmission came from? The TCM changed on the '96 model so if the replacement is from an earlier model the TCM may not be compatible.

i believe the transmission came out of a '96 or '97, however, i had a bad wire terminal on the driver side of the transmission. It is the 4 terminal connector. The garage matched up the color of the wires, do you have the right wires or diagram to correct this connector problem. Next, if this was gradually getting worse (ignition malfunction) could it be the camshaft sensor? The RPM sensor works, so its reading the flywheel.

Can you round up something on the color coded wireing diagram on the transmission on a '96 960. An would that cause it not to fire over when cranking.

I think the 4 wire connector is for the solenoids.

Wiring diagram is attached.

I would have thought that a wiring problem in the transmission would not stop the engine firing. The transmission control module is connected to the engine control module and that is how, for certain transmission faults, the check engine is lit. If the camshaft position sensor were faulty it should set the code P0304 (Volvo code 314) and set the check engine light. Are you able to run another diagnostic to see if that code has been set?

Hello Bill,

I like to start out by saying "You know your Volvo's, an very experienced in the knowledge of Volvo's." The little problem that I had was that earlier I pulled the fuel pump out to siphon some gas out. It took me a whole day to get that right in the fuel tank. I thought I had it back to factory position, but it was off, I mean the float was off. Therefore giving me a incorrect reading on the gauge. Therefore not starting. I like to end by saying "That what your still doing with volvo's an helping others with unsolveable problems is very valueable to the owners. Keep doing a great job on helping others."

Thank you Bill

Sincerely; Dumb volvo mechanic
