2001 s40 Idling problem

Post by Tamure »

I just had the tensioner for the timing belt replaced by a Mechanic. Now the car will not idle it will start and run but it will shut off when your foot is off the gas. I believe this to be a timing problem. With respect to the Mechanic he said he timed it properly but the cover was broken. He indicated to me that the timing marks are on this cover and he did the best he could. There is spark and gas to the plugs. My question is what else could be? Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. We are in the process of trying to find a new cover.

With all due respect, 'his best' may not be good enough.
If the cover is broken, you could still count and record the number of teeth on the belt between the marks on the sprockets, and then use this information when installing the belt to eliminate 'guesswork', which may lead to a very costly outcome...
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Timing is usually done by aligning the sprocket marks against the reference marks on the cover. In order to do it correctly, you need a 'good' cover (unless there is another reliable method)
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
