Timing Question for Volvo 240 Engine
Timing Question for Volvo 240 Engine
I have posted on the marine site and still cannot get the boat to run. So I thought since it is an engine with the b230 block and the head is from a 1992 volvo (engine looks the same as the car except I have a carb and a few other attachments. However the timng is the same as the auto I believe. My issue is that after a rebuild, I cannot get the thing to run and I believe it is something to do with the timing. I have aligned the cam shaft gear to the notch in the plate attached to the valve cover, then aligned the crank gear (not pulley) to the mark on block near the shaft. I then aligned the aux. shaft to the notch in the plate the notch appears at the 3:00 position just under the alternator. This I believe drives my distributor which is in the front. with all these aligned to the respective marks, I then aligned my belt with two lines to the crank one to the aux and the other to the cam. the belt lines aligned perfect to the gear dots. Is this what is meant by indexing? Now after I put the harmonic balancer back on and my timng plate, I noticed that the mark on the pulley was not at zero but at 10 degrees btdc. so I removed the dist and rotated the crank clockwise to the zero mark the put the dist back in with the rotor pointing to the #1 cylinder and placed my cap and aligned the wires to the correct firing order with #1 positioned where the rotor was pointing. 1, 3, 4, 2. the engine will not start. It is on the compression stroke as well as it pushed air throught the plug hole when covered. I have no idea and need layman's terms to figure this out. any help is much appreciated. thanks. Dennis

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
Bill.
The timing for the B230F engine is 12 degrees before tdc which is what you set when you aligned the marks. By taking it zero you have moved the timing.I noticed that the mark on the pulley was not at zero but at 10 degrees btdc.
