Question about valve timing / timing belt installation

Post by Twarr12000 »

On my ‘99 S70 with VVT on the exhaust cam, the CCV hub is spring loaded. This caused me tremendous confusion on reassembly after a head gasket repair. The procedure, according to VIDA, involves rotating the engine clockwise 90 degrees past the timing marks, then ‘backwards’ or counterclockwise, until the marks line up.
All fine. Only, when you remove the belt, the hub spring returns counterclockwise. If you put the belt back on like this it will be way off. You have to rotate the hub clockwise and hold it while installing the belt.

I’ve read some CCVs aren’t spring loaded so they stay put when you do the ‘rotate back to timing marks’ step.

What am I missing?
