The guy who used to work on my old V70R said DEXIII in the 4 speeds, Mobil 3309 in the 5 speeds. My old r was a 4 speed and I nearly put in 3309 but dug a little deeper and found out about this. The 3309 should be easy to get. I still have the case I bought by mistake and as luck would have it, my next Volvo turned out to be a 98 V70, 4 speed so the 3309 will continue to hold up one side of my shelf.

3309 is backwards compatible and works just fine in the old 4 speeds but not the other way around, (Dex 3 is not good in the 5 speeds) so don't let it get old sitting on the shelf for years and then go bad.
Valvoline Max life is 3309 compatible but you should do a complete fluid change not a single drain and fill.

Dozzy,if you're not able to get your hands on Toyota T-IV ATF, avlube.com is your best bet for Mobil 3309. The guys here know what they're talking about. While the fluid might seem expensive, it is relatively nominal when compared with the prospect of having to replace your transmission. Maybe that's a bit dramatic, but the advice provided here should be taken seriously.

ATF is in my to-do list. In my readings of MVS posts, many argue, and agree on D&F on cars with 100K-mi. I believe both my cars, 1997 850na, and 2001 V70XC, are running with respective original ATFs. Would a short-intervals 3-phase D&F make up for a complete FLUSH as I switch to Mobil's 3309?

Spring in Great Lakes.
Many thanks.

With about 115,000 miles on my car, I did three drain and fills on my car last weekend, driving a combination of ten city and highway miles in between each flush. Each drain yielded about 3.25 quarts. The transmission fluid was brown and had clearly never been serviced. I've driven approximately 100 miles since the drain and fills without any problem whatsoever. Even after three rounds, the fluid was not clear enough, or red enough for my liking. I will probably do two more rounds when more 3309 arrives at my door. I've read other folks suggesting that the drain and fills should occur in conjuncture with oil changes, or every other oil change. My approach was less conservative but appears to have been successful.

Absolutely!
Just remember to reset the TCM fluid counter when you decide that you like the color. This will tell 'her' that you've just put in fresh fluid and make her even happier :D
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

I this a DIY item, or a task performed at the dealership after achieving D&F marker?

To JRL,
So I can safely use the Mobil 3309 in my 98 V70 AWD? Mine is one of the earlier ones, close to being an 850. I have 12 quarts as well as the FCP drian kit thing that I bought for my old V70R. Can I just use that prodedure to get a nearly 100% substitution with the 3309 fluid? All else being equal should I just not tempt fate and use some decent DEXIII in my old car?
Thanks,
