850 Manifold Flex questions.

Post by Hanzi »

I have a 95 850 GLT N/A. I have no exhaust after the manifold. Let me rephrase that- I am actually missing the exhaust, plus the flex portion of the manifold. The manifold is in good condition, and the piece left has a good solid flare around the exit pipe. Is there an after market fix that would let me bolt stock parts up? Can Something be clamped/welded to to that pipe that replaces the flex portion of the manifold? Short of that, how difficult is it to get the manifold off, does the motor need to be pulled?

Thanks

The exhaust manifold comes right off with the engine still in the car. Well, except for rust ...

You can source an aftermarket flex pipe but it won't come with the flange that yours originally had on the end of it, so that won't really solve the problem. Although if you go to a muffler shop they may have other, cheap ideas. I think you are going to end up getting another exhaust manifold, I'd suggest from a junkyard or the OBX ones from eBay that are popular here.

Since you need the entire exhaust, manifold back, your best bet might be to find someone who recently wrecked their car, and pull the whole thing from the vehicle.

Thanks. I have started looking for wreck/salvage and voila- some one is parting out one with an 8 month old exhaust sytem. The only problem is that it is a sedan. Will it still fit, minus a different tail section (after the muffler?) It seems based on parts lists on the net that it is the same up until that point.

Thanks again.

AS long as the engine is a n/a it is the same for the wagon and the sedan.

Good luck on your search!

The manifold came off like a prom dress! No problems whatsoever- I then ordered a new one like you said would happen.

Thanks for the replies.

make sure you get the proper bolts and studs too if you have not managed to salvage them from the old manifold.

You may also need to order the gaskets if you cant re-use the old ones.

Just to +1 that comment: If you bought an OBX manifold, the manifolds are really nice but be warned that the hardware (and gaskets) they come with is worthless. You will want to use the old parts or get new.

Next Problem:

When the exhaust was "removed" from the car they did not bother to unhook the O2 sensors. The connector for the back appears fine, but the connector for the front had its wires pulled from it on both ends. In other words, the leads were pulled from both the male side that is connected to the sensor and the leads on the female side that go to the computer.

When rewiring this I have a problem- the leads from the computer are not labelled.
Sensor wires are:
1=White,2=White,3=Grey,4=Black.

I assume they match the female side as
1=Green,2=Green,3=Green with Black Stripe,4=Black

Can anyone verify this? How about #1,2- are the White/Green wires interchangeable?

Thanks again- I am still still trying to figure out the wiring diagram PDF.

I'm no totally following the nature of the damage, post a picture maybe? Or maybe someone will better understand and provide an answer.

Note that if you crimp the O2 wires to repair them, the connection may not be good enough. You will find out, it will throw a code so worth a try anyway, but keep it in mind you may end up needing a new sensor with wires intact.
