1999 V70 Engine rattling and/or clanking.

Post by madman118 »

I have a 1999 V70 FWD Non-turbo 2.4 I5 aprox.180,000 miles. It produces a rattling clanking noise. Non synchronous (doesn't match)to the engine speed, basically it just sort of rattles at will. Acceleration also causes some initial rattle but only momentarily. Also if it counts my engine has none of the infamous valve lifter tapping going on ether. Any idea whats not working under there.
To do list:
Subframe/Control arms-Done
PCV replacement-Done
Alternator-Done
Stupid stalling issue-Next
ABS module-Next
Stupid hood latch
Small cosmetic fixes

Look for a loose heat shield or bracket of some sort.

I had a muffler replaced on a car and the heatshield above it rattled whenever you'd hit a certain resonance.

Going out to check for loose problems. I just found more bad. The valves are now clearly ticking and the clunking is constant. In addition to that the engine has some how sucked up at least a quart of oil in about 2 weeksand is clearly burning oil. Is it fixable or is it on the way out?

The valves are ticking probably because it's low on oil. They get noisy when they don't have the exact oil pressure they want.

These engines don't burn oil all of a sudden so much as LEAK it - and it may not reach the ground over 80% of the time. Get under the car and see where it may be leaking; cam seals are often good suspects as there are 4 of them and they all like to leak.

Not a leak to be found. I had it up on a lift for about 2.5 hours a couple days ago replacing the front right control arm and sub frame and I didn't find any leaks then either. But when I open up the oil cap, its smoking :/

If the dipstick is smoking too, your PCV system has developed a clog. That can make it "eat" oil as the oil vapors aren't removed from the air intake tube and just pass right into the cylinders.

There's a writeup pinned at the top of the forum here. The post under mine discusses what it entails for a non turbo model.

Also, if you were working in that area, is the front engine mount by the crankshaft pulley collapsed? That could be causing your noise and a ton of vibration.

You may have two separate issues.

The rattling and clanking could be your front engine mount as you mention acceleration and the noise.

The other issue could be a clogged PCV system and the oil is being draw into the intake for burning? Anyone care to help out with this thought?

The front engine mount I recall being pretty tore up when i did the sub frame so that might be the likely culprit. The dipstick is blowing smoke too which is indicating that the pcv system does indeed have a clog. So by that logic if I clear the pcv then no oil goes into the engine then there's no burning/eating oil? Ill look into the pcv idea when the sun comes out tomorrow. Thanks for all your help so far.

Do the PTC first and see if it clears the smoke in the Oil Cap and Dipstick. The elbow and hard vacuum line must be cleared (be sure it passes air) or else changing the PCV system will not get it all. The hard line may (most likely will) break so you'll either replace the whole thing or patch it up (splice it in) with some thick walled Vacuum hose.

If the smoke is gone your Oil Trap under the intake is still good to go! Rid the smoke problem and you'll be able to tell if that is where the oil is going and if it is still disappearing you'll need to look else where. Perhaps someone can add to my last statements!
