940 Starting Problem
940 Starting Problem
Have a 1992 940 GLS non turbo with the 16 valve engine. It has 180,000 km and seems to run well. When starting I have to push the gas pedal down part way or it seems to kick back and not start. When warm it has not started at all a few times. Done the usual maintenance with plugs, wires and rotor. Where should I begin at fixing before it does not start at all?

Is the Check Engine Light (CEL) lit? Have you checked for fault codes using the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) unit in the engine compartment? Instructions for its use are pinned at the top of the forum.
Apart from plugs, wires and rotors you should also be checking:
The spark from at least one of the plugs. This can be done by removing the plug, reconnecting the plug lead, and lay it on the engine with the tip very close to the metal. Have someone try to start the engine and watch for the spark which should be a bright blue colour. Anything less than bright blue you need to check further. Warning do NOT hold the plug whilst doing this check as you could get a hefty shock.
If the spark isn't too healthy check:
The earth (ground) connectors on the intake manifold for the control unit and power stage and ignition coil resistance.
Also to be checked if the above are OK are the engine coolant temperature sensor and the engine speed sensor.
Bill.
