Catalytic Converter

Post by RdFaerie »

My check engine light came on Tuesday so I took it to a VERY reputable mechanic. He advised me that my catalytic converter is cracked. Throwing code PO420. I don't have to put it thru emissions testing till June. Can this harm my car?
The mechanic wanted to use a 'VOLVO' part (which cost $1204). I found a complete kit for $250 at Auto Parts Warehouse online. I DID send him a link to what ?I saw to make sure it wasn't just a universal kit. He hasn't responded yet. I will check back with him tomorrow.
I just A: wanted to know if I could hold off on this repair for a month or so
and B: has anyone used an 'aftermarket' kit?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks,
Allisha

I have only had success with a MagnaFlow aftermarket cat passing the emissions test. But in Davidson your car will only be checked for codes by the computer and physically checked physically with a mirror for a cat. If the cat is fully clogged the excess back pressure can hurt the motor. Keep in mind that cats do not wear out or fail on their own. an improper fuel to air ratio is responsible for causing its death. If the air/fuel issue is not resolved then you will damage the next cat as well.

www.magnaflow.com You mechanic can buy one cheaply from www.summitracing.com.

They said it wasn't clogged. Said it was 'cracked'. Could that just be a bad cat? and THANKS for the advice!

I haven't changed enough to be an expert but for me they usually do not crack until they start to clog and overheat the pipe causing it to crack. Most often an oxygen sensor or bad MAF is the culprit of the malfunction.

Fixing Bad Catalytic Converters With Inefficiency Code P0420

Crack could mean bad casing (exhaust leak) or the inside is starting to break apart. Try the link above as you have nothing to lose except the code. If it is breaking apart your muffler will soon rattle a lot and you will need to change both. If so you'll also want to find the cause. My 88 Camry was from a set of cap and rotors. In trying to find the problem turn the ignition on and on flooding the Catalytic Converter I believe.
