850 turbo starting problem

Post by iogikuma »

I have a 1996 850 AWD (Turbo) wagon. I have been having a recent problem starting it when warm/hot. It starts OK when cold, but I often (not every time) find it very hard to start when warm/hot.

I find it of no use continuing to crank. I just turn the key and hold it while it turns over a few times and if it doesn't start, I stop and repeat. It does always start, but can take 6-10 attempts. During a lot of the attempts it seems to be just about to start.

A local Volvo dealer checked the car and found that the SAS air pump had failed. I replaced the air pump, SAS valve and relay and had the codes cleared from the computer. Since replacing the air pump, warm/hot starting has been somewhat better, but I often still have much the same problem as before.

The dealer also cleared a Crank Angle/RPM Sensor fault code when he cleared the air pump fault codes, and I suppose it could be an RPM sensor fault, but the sensor was replaced a couple of years ago.

One thing that might help - if I clutch/roll start the car, it starts instantly and perfectly, hot or cold. That makes me less sure that it might be the RPM sensor.

I would really appreciate any help ASAP, as I'm taking the car back to the dealer tomorrow and would like some direction in what I should get him to try.

Definitely not the starter. I can't confirm whether it's getting a spark when cranking, but I think it is as it always seems to be on the verge of starting when cranking. At other times it starts fiurst go, and it starts OK when cold.

I just had it at the dealers, and despite having replaced the secondary air system air pump, valve and relay a couple of weeks ago, and having the error codes cleared a week ago, it has generated (during the past week) -

* a new 448 error code "Pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump flow fault" and

* a new 442 error code "Pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR)

Since replacing the SAS air pump, SAS valve and relay, it starts much better when warm/hot, but a couple of times this week has still has the old trouble starting - took about 10 tries to get it started a couple of days ago.

Any ideas?
