To make sure I don't mistate my OCDness, at right around 3000 miles I start paying uber-close attention to the color of the oil. Like checking it once a day instead of once or twice a week. As soon as it's more blackish-brown than beautiful amber yellow I change it. On my old Volvo that was usually between 3k and 3.5k miles.

On my wife's 2004 CRV the Mobil-1 w/ K&N filter would keep it nice and yellow until 5-6k. She just traded in for an 09 Pilot and I haven't had a chance yet to see how that will treat the oil.
