Re: Question for Oil Experts

Post by jtp »

If any one seriously wants old oil I'm 45 minutes NW of Baltimore. Come and get it. I've got a ton of it in both of the locations where I work on my car, that way I can piss as many people off as possible with all my containers of old oil. Sometimes I don't cap off the milk jug though so use a filter or you'll be lubricating you engine with at least a couple dead crickets.

To make sure I don't mistate my OCDness, at right around 3000 miles I start paying uber-close attention to the color of the oil. Like checking it once a day instead of once or twice a week. As soon as it's more blackish-brown than beautiful amber yellow I change it. On my old Volvo that was usually between 3k and 3.5k miles.

Why so OCD? Until last October I was putting 800 miles a weak on the NA 98 s70. Driving 65 miles each way to work and then basically functioning like a taxicab during the day as a case manager (on the extremely well-maintained streets of our nation's capitol , often in stop-and-go traffic). Depending on a +150k mile 15 year old car that much made me pretty OCD. Other than requiring a s--- ton of suspension work she held up beautifully until my poor monitoring of a small coolant leak (once I was no longer the daily driver) led to overheating.

On my wife's 2004 CRV the Mobil-1 w/ K&N filter would keep it nice and yellow until 5-6k. She just traded in for an 09 Pilot and I haven't had a chance yet to see how that will treat the oil.

The color of the oil doesn't mean anything. If you really want to see how your oil is doing send off a sample to blackstone labs after 3000 miles. My guess is they'll tell you your oil has a lot of life left in it.

Yeah I need to do that. I had their sampling kit rolling around my trunk for like 6 months and never remembered to do it when I was changing the oil.

374K on my 98 S70 running M1 and 10K intervals...oil is of much higher quality these days...3K OCI's are from the 60's and Jiffylube marketing (although I think they have stopped that advertising now). Your wasting resources and money at 3K.

I have always run junk, generic non-synth oil in my cars and run them 3-4k
but only because it's no-name oil and I don't know how it's "chemically" doing at higher mileages. (also because it's free to me). My cars have never had any problems with that. I work in a shop, and the problems with the high mileage and synth oil change intervals, are that your everyday joe never checks his or her oil level. Their car with 100k miles, meanwhile, is leaking or burning at a rate that can damage it in 7500 miles but would be still ok at 3000. Basically, if you don't tell people to come back at 3000, they'll come back when they hear "a noise".

m1 synthetic, 10w40 in the summer (it gets hot and stays hot here) and 5/10w-30 in the winter. change it around 5k or less, depending on how long the car has sat for. i aim for about 2 oil changes a year regardless of mileage just because im old school. 10k is way too high for my driving regiment

I have a 94 850 Turbo with 145,000 miles. Last oil change was 08 (by previous owner, I owned it since Sept 2011). He put approx 1000 miles on that change. Afterwards it was only driven once or twice a month until I bought it. My question is, what kind of oil is recommended? Do I need synthetic? Would synthetic cause leaks if conventional oil was used previously?

Can you say sludge? Get that out of there and replace it with ANYTHING! Change it again in 500 miles with something good so that oil acts as a cleaner.

Independent Volvo uses Swepco

SWEPCO 502 Oil Improver - Local Rep recommended fresh oil with filter and run for 500 miles
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/sho ... co_pg6.htm

This guy talks about Zinc in the oil. Modern cars can use it as much as older cars. Swepco continues to use Zinc (as well as Brad Penn) and Phosphorus in their products that is why they are Superior than other oils. I concur with him on the WIX filter however.

I found this Article Interesting as I have read recently about using Motor Cycle Oils in cars
* Why use a motorcycle oil?
* Can I use a diesel motor oil in a car?
* What makes Swepco 306 15w40 different from any other diesel oils?
* If new oils, with reduced zinc etc., are lacking in lubrication quality, why is it that engines are not being destroyed at a high rate?
