Interested in a 2001 V70 T5. Any issues I need to know about
I'm a big 1st gen 850/V70 fan, but lately have been seeing some really good deals popping up on the newer gens. Are the 2nd gen V70's as realiable as the previous ones? Anything I need to be concerned about?

I can not speak from personal experience, as my 2001 xc70 has been great, however there is a rather large crowd that dislikes the 01 and 02 transmissions. The claim is that they fail prematurely due to "stop neutral" and the B-4 servo cover, some also claim that the valve body tends to go quickly as well. I am not trying to claim that those who have experienced problems are liars, but I also realize that the reason most people are around here is because something has broken on their car. If you decide to go with an 01 or 02 get the tranny fluid changed and refilled with the right stuff, make sure it has the latest software, and make sure you change the timing belt if the car has over 100K on it.

As was said on SS, stay away from 01s and 02s

I owned a 2000 V70 that was developing one problem after another, so I sold it, and found a 2001 which was the first change after the 1998-2000 models. My 2001 is a world of difference from the 2000! It drives, rides, and handles much better partly due to the upgrade to 16" wheels. The transmission is much smoother, and the overall feel of the vehicle is much tighter. If you find a 2001 that has been taken care of as good as the one I found, you will be very pleased!

Don't forget you've also got a Magnetti Marelli electronic throttle module in '99 to '02 models. If it wasn't recently replaced you'll be around $600 poorer plus fitting and possible s/w reload. They can fail without doing a huge amount of miles and are just coming out of 10 year warranty.

I am picking up my first Volvo tomorrow, a 2001 V70 T5 Auto with 153k on it. I got it cheap and much of the expensive stuff has been replaced already, A/C compressor, ETM, Turbo.
It will need some TLC to get it right but I am excited to start this new adventure. I hope that this isn't a mistake but only time will tell.
My first projects are:
Tires
Tune up
Timing belt kit
Transmission flush
Advice is welcome, I hope to learn a lot from the community here.

16" wheels have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with this
Many Gen 1s came with 16" and 17" wheels including 2000s where at least 50% had 16" wheels as standard
All S70 and V70SE models, ALL XCs, ALL V70Rs
If you have a good 2001 that's a rarity, and if you drove an 04 (or newer) you would see and feel the same amount of difference like from 2000 to 2001, they're THAT much better.

Before you do ANYTHING, do a thorough check of and service your transmission.Sbcv70 wrote:I am picking up my first Volvo tomorrow, a 2001 V70 T5 Auto with 153k on it. I got it cheap and much of the expensive stuff has been replaced already, A/C compressor, ETM, Turbo.

Drive it for a week or two to see if any tranny bugs show up.

Look out for a false neutral in drive when coming to a stop. Make sure you go to a dealer to have it updated if this occurs. Check your transmission's serial number and see if it falls within the range for the B4 servo cover update. It's a $22 part that will help preserve yor trans. Do this at the time of changing fluid.JRL wrote:Before you do ANYTHING, do a thorough check of and service your transmission.Sbcv70 wrote:I am picking up my first Volvo tomorrow, a 2001 V70 T5 Auto with 153k on it. Thanks to all who have offered advice. I will start with the trans fluid change and will check for the servo cover issue while I am there.
I will say that it shifted well on the test drive and it was at full operating temperature when I drove it. I am hoping the trans will make it 50k more before a rebuild is needed.
Again, looking forward to learning all I can about this vehicle.
