Rear seatbelt will not pull down

Post by tboothe33 »

My rear seatbelt is stuck in the retracked position, it will not pull down around anyone. I think it is becuase I put the seats down without pulling the seatbelt all they way out. I would like to know how to release it.

Thanks.

Well, nobody has replied so I searched the internet and found this. I'm going to give this a try.

Hello and thanks for choosing JustAnswer.com!

I'm assuming a Volvo V70/S60/S80 that this happened on. There is a small plastic piece in the seatbelt that looks like a button. This prevents the seatbelt from retracting too far into the winding mechanism. If the button pops off the belt, the seat belt retracts too far into the winder and makes it so there is no slack in the belt. The seatbelts have a system that prevents them from releasing if they are tilted too far off of vertical. It's a safety system that keeps the seatbelts from letting go in case of a rollover accident. This gets triggered when the seat if folded down. With the button gone, it sticks the seat in the folded position.

The best way to get them loose again, is to pull the side bolster on the outside of the seat. Under it you should be able to get to the body attach point for the belt. If you remove that bolt, you can get the seatback to tilt up again. Once the seat is up and latched, the belt will release. You'll need to get the two little plastic pieces that go in the belt to fix it from the dealer. One of them pokes through the belt and the other goes over the pin. There will be a small hole in the belt where the old one was. Then you use a hot tool to melt the pin. It's a pretty inexpensive fix even if the dealer does it.

Hope that helps!

There are actually two little buttons. If the seat is stuck down with the belt holding it, then the seat belt is probably over-retracted. There is a very small plastic button that's about 2 feet up the belt when the seat is in the upright position. There is another plastic button that keeps the sliding buckle from dropping past a certain point on the belt also.

The anchor point for the seatbelt is under the lowest part of the side bolster right under where the belt disappears between the seat bottom and the bolster. The side bolster is only held in by a wire bail on the top held in by a plastic receiver for it, and the lower end is held in place by a tab that slides into a spot on the body. To remove it, simply grasp the upper portion of the bolster and "pop" it outwards. Tilt it forward, and then lift the lower tab out of where it goes into the body. There will be a 14mm head bolt holding the seatbelt to the chassis. 13mm if the belt has been swapped out. Once you take that loose the seat will be able to come back up. Wiggle the belt a little when the seat is all the way up, and the belt should release again. Needless to say, until the button that keeps slack in the belt is replaced it will happen again. It's about a $3 part so it's a cheap fix.

Hope that gets it!

1375 days and 19 hours ago. Customer Reply seat is up now but belt still won't realease?

Posted by Need4Swede 1375 days and 19 hours ago. Expert's Answer Sometimes you have to pull in and out on it several times to get it to release. There is also a possibility that the plastic button is stuck under the upper seat belt guide. If you can't wiggle it enough to get it to let loose, you'll have to take off that upper panel on the seat to figure out where that little button went. The seatbelts do sometimes jam, but it's rare. Usually it's that stupid little plastic button getting to where it shouldn't be or falling off entirely in the car somewhere.
