How do you replace the license plate lights in a 2001 Volvo S40?

You need to remove the inside protective housing in the trunk ... it takes a while to remove all those plastic screws but that's the only way!

What's the best way to get those plastic screws without breaking them? I need to check my license plate lights but can't even get past this point.!
