1995 960 will not start

Post by kluhrm123 »

Car has been running great. this week it decided to just not start. The car turns over great but will not start. Checked gas at the fuel rail and it there. Has 12 volts at the injectors. I will start on the Crank Position Sensor (KPS) and the cam position sensor (CPS) tomorrow. I will change out (some used in my garage) and see if that is it. I need to verify spark on the plugs tomorrow also. If the sensors are good- the fuel is there (which it is) and has spark- am I mssing anything else? (In case it still does not start?)

Since I have 6 coils it isnt that- (ie One bad coil)- if My two sensors are good but no spark at the plugs? I wouldnt know what the next step would be- any ideas? Mike

No spark at the plugs - check the two power stage units, also known as the ignition discharge modules. They are mounted either side of the intake manifold.

Bill

Do you have info/test procedures on how to test them and also if one goes out does that prevent 12 volts from going to the spark plugs? Mike

I got to work on my car a little today. Noted I dont seem to have saprk at plug. Only started with first one. I did note that it will turn over in P but will not turn over (crank) or do any thing on N (as the shifter moves). Any possibilities it could be the PnP? (have had PnP issues with am 850 but this is our 960). I don't even know how to diagnose that on this car. There is excellent info on your site for the 850 which helped me get the shift solenoids done- any help would be appreciated. (Have not had time to check the power stage either). Mike

Gear position sensor will not make it fail to run.
Check for voltage at the wire that is the same color at each coil ( it is green/red wire). One of the power feed wires getting chafed to the metal of the cylinder head and blowing the fuse that powers them all is a common occurrence.
The fuse is #7 in the box in engine compartment on left side behind MAF sensor.

Thanks for the great advice. I checked the fuse and sure enough it was burnt. I put another one in there and that was the issue. After some encourangement it started. Thanks again for the tip- I will remember to buy a box for each of our 960's. Mike

Does anyone have some great info on how best to cut in some wiring for the six coil wire/wirings? I would like to fix both of them although I can start with the sedan (which the wiring is worse on). I am not impressed at all with the connectors, the wire etc. It seems as though someone has scabbed in some wires before. Any advice would really be great. Mike
