Replacing the Catallytic Converter

Post by lucentedg »

This may already exist, but when I search for it this is what I get: "The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: catalytic converter ."

Vehicle: 2001 Volvo V70 2.4 non turbo with 128,000 miles.

So here it is:

1. My mechanic is telling me the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. That is the code he is getting. I am also smelling a rotten egg smell on some starts. I know it can sometimes be the 02 sensor, but with the smell, I suspect it really is the catalytic convertor. Is that a reasonable assumption?

2. If it is the catalytic converter, can I use one of the universal ones that are so ubiquitous on ebay and other places? I know it requires modification, but it seems a couple hours of modding is worth only paying $100-200 for the unit.

Any help here on this? I have to go through CT emissions, so I need to resolve this catalytic converter problem. I am loathe to spend $800 on a new one.

Holy Moly. Has anyone ever done this, the gallon of lacquer thinner in the tank? I would be willing to try it, but it sounds fairly unorthodox.

There are definitely a lot skeptics when surfing the web on this subject but if you read the comments on Youtube you'll learn a few things. It is not a cure all but those who really just have a CAT problem had great results. If yours is rattling it has started to break apart inside. Scotty buys the Lacquer from an Auto Paint Supply Store.

COMMENT:
It works!!! 1996 Accord with 180K miles, had P0420 for some time, needed to clear it to get inspected. Had been clearing code but it kept coming back before I read Scotty's post. So, I put 1 gallon Klean Strip lacquer thinner (16 bucks at wallymart) in half-tank as Scotty said. Used car normally for about a week, then when near empty went to inspection station. It passed inspection!! After a week, code is still off. Thanks Scotty, you saved me some $!!!

The high school chemistry lesson is obvious. A search for "lacquer thinner in the gas tank" in Google reveals a variety of opinions, fewer takers though. Where is MVS lab?

So...I did it. Bought a gallon of lacquer thinner at Walmart for $16 and put it in the tank. Those rectangle cans it comes in are hard to pour into a funnel. I ran about 140 miles after adding it, 240 miles since the 0420 code was reset. So far, the CEL has not come back on. Also, it seems to be running a little smoother. I will report back in a couple hundred miles.

That is great to hear lucentedg! My cousin just reminded me we reversed the gas cap rubber gasket and the P0402 has not come back on his 2003 Tundra. It would come on and off and throw the P0402 and most recent P0401 or 03 I forget which and his mechanic said that was the likely culprit for his truck.
