2000 V70-XC Turbo Starting Issues

Post by Hohenstauffen »

Have appreciated earlier advice re notorious starting issues with this model. I'm running at 164K miles.
After many tweaks, and a few new parts, fuel pump, with check valve, etc. my Volvo now has started every single time for the last month or so.The last fix was to remove the Antenna Ring and apply dielectric grease to the female electrical connector, which was good advice. Recently I cleaned the MAF sensor and electrical connector and applied dielectric grease to the female connector. Car still starts but there is some intermittent roughness as it's firing up. I can live with this, but it's not a normal process. I also recently replaced the upper engine mount with IPD's mount as mine was broken. I can live with this, but wonder if an O2 sensor might be failing but don't know how to check any of this. There are no warning lights on so likely no codes to be read. I'm getting about 20.4 MPG, driving town and highway miles, more when I can cruise at 60 MPH or 70 MPH. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

You can still have some codes without the CEL lit up, so scan it to be sure. A bad O2 sensor will throw a CEL but other than that, there isn't a great way to check them.

For the rough starting, how long does it last - just as it's starting or until it's warm?

I'd review the Stage 0 stuff to make sure everything is up to snuff; plug gap, hoses, belts, etc. After that, maybe check the other engine mounts.

Thanks for your prompt reply. The "roughness" I mentioned is quite brief, and sometimes doesn't occur. Maybe I'm being too picky since it used to be much worse, but other cars I've had certainly start much more smoothly. I'm going to have my girlfriend sit in the car with the brake on and trans in drive and loosen and re tighten the main bolt on the upper engine mount as recommended by IPD. I've changed plugs at regular intervals. I'll have someone look at the other engine mounts and see if Auto Zone can read any codes. I'll let you know if anything creates improvement. Love the car when it's working well, which is most of the time and it does have plenty of miles on it. I'd like to keep it running as long as possible; can't afford another one.
