My car has started doing this and it's getting worse... at start up, it sometimes stauls out and it takes several attempts to get the engine to crank back over. In park and in drive when coming to a stop, the engine surges between 700 and 1,000 RPM's. It sounds really bad in park. When I'm slowing down to stop, sometimes the car will actually surge forward a bit.
Last night i unplugged the battery for about 15min. The check engine light went away and the surge has lessened a little bit, but it's still there.
Might be important to note I have had a coolant leak for a few months.
HELP?!

Hi Chris
A common reason for these cars surging without any codes is a bad MAF sensor. Just unplug the electrical sensor connector while it is surging and if it smooths out you have a bad MAF. Replace these units with Bosch only. Do not by any means use an aftermarket brand. These cars are very picky. BOSCH ONLY MAF
Best Regards, SpeedyPete

big tube from the air cleaner to the throttle, you'll see a plastic thing attached to the top of the air cleaner cover and that will have a electrical connector. Press down on the metal piece on the connector and wiggle the connector off.
This sounds like the MAF, my V70R (98) did that same thing, MAF fixed it.

Hi. It could also be the gas you are using. Are you using 87 or 91? Because I have a 98 T5 and because I am using 87, my car is trembling and sometimes sounds like its on the verge of shutting off. Just a thought, hope it helps
My car does very similiar things to your car too.
