Timing belt writeup

Post by jimmyboy »

I've got a timing belt job coming up on the 99 S70 soon. I did the 1998 before, so this will be my second time around.

What happened to the write-up that used to be at the top of this forum? I can't remember what it was called, but I can't seem to find it.

Also, is there anything different between the 1999 and 1998 motors for a timing belt? Just about everything else is different between the two cars.

If the 99 is an early non turbo version, it will be just like the 98 with no Variable valve timing. If its a GLT or T5, it will have VVT on the exhaust cam - so see the links posted above to understand it.

If you've dealt with setting the mechanical tensioner before, that will be the same. Some early 98s (like mine) have the old hydraulic tensioner from 850s.

Thank you good sirs. They are both turbo models (99 a T5; 98 a GLT); forgot to mention that. That does look like it adds some complexity to realigning the cams properly.

The hardest part of the job for me is getting the bolt out of the tensioner roller bracket. I have broken bits, stripped the bolts and all kinds of sad things. In those cases I have pulled the nut off of the roller bolt, took the roller off and put the new roller on the bolt, then the nut. The problem with that is that I can't get the nut torqued properly. So I worry about that nut coming loose and tossing the belt.
