just bought a 1984 240

Post by timber_cruiser »

My son, who is away at college, just bought a 1984 240 volvo. It has 140,000 miles, has an AT transmission, and according to my son's description drives well and is in good condition. He paid $400 for the car so it seems like a decent purchase.

My son is going to bring the car home soon so I will have a chance to do some work on it while it is here. Do these cars need periodic timing belt replacements? I would like some advice or suggestions from any experienced volvo owners on what to look for in terms of repair or maintenance items.

thnx

The timing belt on 1984/5 US 240s should be replaced at 45,000 miles or 3 years, whichever is the sooner.

I would certainly change the engine oil and filter unless there is proof that it was done recently. I would also consider changing the gearbox oil as that is an item often overlooked by owners of older vehicles.

Check and replace as necessary spark plugs; spark plug leads (they should have a date stamped on them to show how old they are); air filter, brake pads; brake discs (rotors); alternator and other engine drive belts. Check for oil leaks from engine, gearbox, steering rack and rear axle and check rubber boots on the steering gear for splits.

The list could go on but usually other items such as wheel bearings, balljoints and suspension parts let you know if they are going to be troublesome. I would give these a close visual examination without dismantling.

Thanks for the advice, I will go through the list and pay attention to the timing belt especially.
