ok great. Thank you that makes sense. So i can just spray normal carb cleaner in there and it wont mess with the electronics of the sensor?

Unscrew the hose from the ETM then release the four 10MM head bolts securing it to the inlet manifold, once its off the engine you can get to the engine side of the ETM which is the bit that carbons up and blast that with carb cleaner, don't try cleaning it with it still attached to the engine or the crap that gets released will go through the engine when you next start the car, 30 minutes job to remove, clean and refit the ETM on a N/A Volvo but circa 3 hours on the Turbo models.

The electronics are housed within the body of the unit but the sensors are well away from the butterfly valve which is the part that gumms up - Mike

So I took the ETM off and was cleaning it. Is it supposed to not close completely?

Also there is oil all inside around the coils... Looks like it is leaking out from the top where the cap is but why would it be doing that? Would a new cap fix this issue? A seal broken in it or something?

Also... I have never seen plugs like this before... There are 3 prongs instead of two and seem to be from volvo. When I looked up the stock plugs though i thought they were bosh's....?

I also checked and the plugs do have spark when I pull them out and ground them. I am trying to look and see now if its the immobilzing security issue you mentioned earlier.

Those are stock Volvo plugs.

As far as the oil up top, nearly all of these do this. Once you get it running and warmed up, pull out the oil dipstick and check for smoke puffing out of the opening. If its clear, replace the cap on the oil seal. If its not, you're in for a PCV system replacement before changing that seal.

It does sound like your problem is definitely with the antenna ring since its sparking (and running!) and then shutting down again. Sometimes cleaning the contacts is enough without replacing the antenna ring.

So I cleaned the connection last night and it started up and run like normal... BUT than i shut it off and went to start it again and it wouldnt turn over. So i went this morning and bought a new antenna ring. Unplugged the battery, unplugged the old antenna and put the new one on and it started right up BUT did the same thing as last night where once I shut it off and tried to turn it back on it wouldnt turn over again!!

ANY SUGGESTIONS?!?! I am very perplexed right now. Does the system need to be reset or something? Is this not the issue?

Clarify "wouldn't turn over" for us please.

Does it:
-Start and then shut off like it was doing before?
-Nothing happens when you turn the key?
-Crank but not start AT ALL?

So I puleld the battery terminals let it sit for a little while and than put them back on and it started up. I let it run and after about 30 seconds to a minute, it died. I tried to restart it and it cranks and doesnt start at all.

Is this a fuel issue? How do i test the fuel pump relay?

Hmmmm...it could be.

Remove the upper fuse panel cover near the windshield. There are a few Torx screws around the edges.

Remove relay #103 and jumper pins 15 and 87 with a paperclip and piece of wire.

Flip the key to position II and listen for the fuel pump. If you do hear it now, turn it to Start and see if it will keep running, shut it off and try again.

If that keeps it running, you've found your problem!

Worked!! Thank you very much! I ran the wire between the two pins and it started up, idled great and had throttle response. I cleaned the old relay and put it back in and it started and died so this must be it. I am going to go get a new one now.
