95 940 starts then dies?

Post by pitshack »

I have a 95 940 thats about to turn 200k. While driving home from class it started runnung really rough, then it died. Now when I turn the ignition it starts then dies a second later. I checked the OBD and it is giving me code2-2-3. I've been reading around and it seems this code is for the IAC.

I'm going to spray some carb cleaner in it and see what happens.
I cleaned the MAF with some MAF cleaner. Afterwards it started and ran for a few seconds then died.

I dont smell any excess fuel from turning it over so I'm thinking it's air related.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

My first suspicion is the fuel pump died.
That car will have the single pump in the tank and they do die after a time.

So would the fuel pump dying cause the 2-2-3 code? Or is that something altogether unrelated?

Just a little update. I checked the fuel pump fuses and they're fine. When I turn the key to the #2 position I can hear the fuel pump relay clicking and a slight whirring noise that lasts about a second, I'm guessing that is the fuel pump.

Also, after sitting for about an hour it seems to start a little stronger but still dies quickly none the less.

I'm hoping it's not the pump because that is way beyond what I can fix in the parking lot of my apartment complex.
I have to study for finals so I will continue to tinker with it during study breaks. Again, any help would be gratly appreciated!

turn the key on so the pump does its brief cycle. Now go depress the shraeder valve on the fuel rail test port and see if fuel discharges from the port. If you have a tire gauge that can be disposed then you can check fuel pressure there while someojne turns the ignition on and off for 3-4 cycles to see if you get a bit over 40 psi of fuel pressure.
The gasoline with ethanol in it usually swells the rubber on the gauge piston and it sticks.

The MFI ECM is opening IAC valve trying to keep engine running sand it dies anyway. The MFI ECM thinks the IAC valve is stuck. IT has no sensor to know there is no fuel pressure or has no spark, etc.

Fuel pump replacement does not require a lift. The access is through a port under the forward load floor panel in back of wagon.

Thanks for the replies jimmy. The car is a sedan not a wagon. I dont know if that makes a difference. I'm going to snoop around in the trunk right now and see if there is any kind of access portal. If there is that would be the best news I've had all day! While I'm out there I will give the schraeder valve thing a whirl.

I"m going to scrounge up a tire pressure gauge and get my girlfriend to turn the key for me after she gets home from work.

I just pulled the fuel pump relay and popped the top off to see if it was messed up in any way. It looked squeaky clean. I then checked the schrader valve. It blew pretty strong and a decent amount of gas came out. I then went back in the car and turned the ignition to #2 4 times and checked the valve again. No fuel at all came out and only a little bit of pressure.

Definetly starting to look like the pump crapped out. Oh, and I did find the portal for the pump in the trunk.

Thanks again for the replies jimmy! If anyone else has any helpful advice I'd be glad to hear it. Thanks
