Central Locking Problems

Hi All

I am new here and new to volvo i have jsut got a 1997 v40 2.0 SE and it has a couple of problems the central locking does not work via the fob or when you put the key in the door but it does work from the button on the dash board

so far i have checked the fuses and greased the linkages in all the doors but i am stuck from now on i would love it to work just from the door

more information can anyone tell me if the s/n on the keyless entry has to match the s/n on the fobs to work
