how to replace timing belt for a 1984 240 DL
Does anyone have a description of how to replace a timing belt on a 1984 240? I tried to locate a repair manual but so far have struck out. Any advice or descriptions would be greatly appreciated!

Get a haynes manual and read the procedure several times, they are about 15$. Then before you remove your old timing belt line up the marks. That way you see the way it should be when you are done. If you haven't done it before it is a bit scary. You should have someone that knows how to do it with you the first time. It is a non interference engine so if you get it wrong you shouldn't hurt anything, this is not so with all cars, on some cars you can do major engine damage if you get it wrong. Once the belt is on and tight turn the engine around clockwise from the front by hand until the marks line up again. A double check to make sure you got it right. Check the idler bearing when the belt is off to make sure it is smooth, if it has play or is rough when turning replace. Check the weep hole on the front of the water pump, if there is evidence of leakage replace water pump while you are in there. Get it right the first time. You might want to even use nailpolish on the marks before you take the belt off.

Does the US version of the Haynes manual actually show how to change the belt?
I have the UK version and it only tells how to put the belt back on after a complete engine out and strip. It does not even explain how to get the belt off when stripping the engine down.
I know Haynes is a UK company and I should push them but there are times when I think they leave a lot out.
Bill.

I agree haynes are not the best. To get the belt off you loosen the 17mm bolt that holds down the idler bearing, pry the idler to take tension off of the belt (there is a spring), (I use a LARGE screwdriver or a small prybar) and then retighten the 17mm. I think you have the 2 peice lower pulley with 10 mm bolts inside and shims between the pulleys to adjust . If this is so keep the shims in their proper position. If you do not have this and have the later design you need the special tool to hold the bottom pulley in position while you loosen the nut. I will see if I can find a picture for you.

Fancy piece of kit. Whatever happened to removing the starter motor and getting an assistant to wedge the flywheel with a large screwdriver?
