recurrent check engine light
recurrent check engine light
My used Volvo V70 I purchased at 100K miles is starting to give me some heartburn. Earlier this year the "check engine" light came on and the alert for "loose gas cap" the gas cap was not loose, but after regular mechanic did a "smoke test" which was negative, we decided to replace the cap. This was done with a cheap cap and the alert and check engine light returned. We then replaced the gas cap with a Volvo brand. Meanwhile, an alert for "open gas door" also came on. the door opens and locks appropriately. So now the check engine light returns. my mechanic cannot figure why and recommends dealer assessment. I also have an ongoing oil use, down 2 qt after 1000 miles, but no evidence of leak on inspection, no drip in parking spot, no indication of oil burn while driving, so a mystery. I would like to find a local mechanic to address my issues rather than dealer if possible. I need to get my emission, annual license done soon, and have to resolve the check engine light before possible. Any ideas??
invest about $100 and buy yourself a good code reader, if brave enough get a chinese vida/dice setup for about $200. This is what the dealer uses to read volvo specific codes.
The generic reader will give you generic codes that are triggering the check engine light. There are hundreds of codes that can trigger the light.
Without codes, nobody can help you and you are at the mercy of the dealer or indie shop.

General consensus is that there is a leak on the J-tube. This is rubber hose that is connected to carbon canister in rear right corner of underbody area. I too have this issue and the code reads similar - leak in evaporative emission system.
You can check for leak and replace/repair the tube and see if that fixes the issue. It's small investment if it is. If not, the issue is something that I can live with.
