Front turn signal/ headlamp

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Front turn signal/ headlamp

Post by Mark27 »

Hello All,
The headlamp and turn signal on my 03 S80 are proving to be quite perplexing to say the least. The passenger side headlamp will not come on when the car is initially started and. After a few minutes of warm up time or after driving a few miles, the headlamp magically comes on. In addition, if I turn the car off after it has been on for a period of time or driven for a few miles, the headlamp comes on as expected. Also when it rains, condensation develops on the lens. Is there any fix for this condition besides buying new headlamps for greater than 500 dollars :o
The front turn signal, driver side, will blink but will not remain lit. I looked at all applicable fuses or what I think are all relevant fuses and the fuses look fine. I also installed a new bulb but the condition remains the same, lamp will blink but will not remain on.
Any help will be really appreciated :D

It seems like the seal on the light is bad, or the black round covers that go directly behind your lights are not screwed on correctly.

Also check the wires where they plug into the bulbs, if they are rock-hard-inflexible, then they are most likely corroded and water damaged inside to the point where it is not getting a good electrical connection. Cut off the hard part of the wire and add new clips for the bulbs.

Thanks interace2,
Update the lamp come's on as expected and I did not touch anything, like I said perplexing! I will check the items you suggested. To my second concern, do you know of a fix for the condensation on the inside headlamp lens?

Like interace2 suggested, The seal on the front of the light may not be doing it's job or the black part on the back, where the bulb goes in, is not on properly. Glass could have a crack in it also. I am thinking this set up is something like my V70.

It is possible you have a broken filament in the head light bulb. After you start driving it might make contact just from vibration and when it does it can expand enough to maintain a good circuit. When shut down for long enough to cool, the filament 'shrinks' until there again is no contact. Eventually it will not come on at all. I had similar thing happen on my 2000 Chevy Astro. Both headlight bulbs eventually failed just due to age and number of cycles I guess...
