Bad Starter? Battery issues car won't start after sitting

Post by dosmainframe »

Hi, I recently changed out a few things on my 760 turbo, in between transit times for getting the parts this car has been sitting around for like 4 weeks or so, about a week ago I drained all the coolant and disconnected the battery so it was sitting without coolant for like 1 week, I finally got all my parts in and got some new coolant today and filled this mofo up and connected all the electrical leads ready to test it out and see if this mean machine will finally start acting right, and BAM! can't get the motor to turn over now any ideas? I'm thinking either the battery got drained too low but it's a really new battery, or something screwed up I checked all the wires everything is where it's suppose to be this thing doesn't even act like it's trying to turn over pumping the gas makes no difference, this is really depressing any ideas guys?

First things first: do your dash lights come on when you turn the key to 'on'?

Yes the lights come on, it seems to have juice in the battery left but it was sitting for a long time, now I cannot get this thing to turn over

I have heard that smacking the starter might get this thing to start... do you have any idea where that is located? I've never had a problem starting this car before except one other time when my battery died I bought a new one less than a year ago now I'm thinking I gotta buy a charger and try to charge it up but what do you think?

Here is a quick list of the things I've replaced on the car since owning it

Replaced:
coolant temp sensor and gauge sensor
Battery
Ignition module
Complete PCV system including oil trap box
Hoses that come off the intake to the A/C
Brake booster check valve and brake booster hose
MAF
Air filter
Fuel pump External main pump new oem bosch part
fuel filter
Spark plugs and Wires are new
Tightened all hose clamps focusing around turbo area everything is good
checked air intake hose for collapsing effect, seems to be good

I'm seriously thinking of buying a charger at walmart charging the battery overnight and returning it in the morning, one of my friends did that seems like a pretty slick move use it for one night and get your cash back I just wish this damn thing would work the right way

Do you have someone who can give you a 'boost' with jumper cables using their car? If it turns over with their battery connected then that would indicate that your battery has died or just depleted itself. Save you buying a charger if it is not necessary. 'New' batteries can fail prematurely.

So just an update I bought a charger, charged the battery at 2 amp over night battery is fully charged now, still did not solve the problem the car just will not start, do you guys think that because I changed the ECT and temp gauge that would cause the car to not want to start? I noticed that even though I change the gauge sensor when I turn the key to ON position, it does not move at all on the gauge I'm wondering if something is wrong with the connection but would that stop my car from starting? the only other thing I can think of is that maybe I need more gas... I have about a little under a quarter tank left, maybe I need to put more fuel in? I know that this fuel gauge is a little wonky and hasn't always been accurate but I've never had a problem starting the car before

Go back to basics. To start you need fuel and spark. You say the fuel level is low, with a possible faulty gauge. After trying to start it have you removed a spark plug to see if it is wet with fuel? If it isn't you have a fuel delivery problem.

Have you checked for a spark? It is easy to do especially if you have removed a plug to see if it is wet. Leave the plug out but connect it to its lead and lay it on the engine so the tip is near to the metal. Turn the key and you should see a bright blue spark shoot out of the plug. No spark - a problem.

Depending on how long the car has been sitting it may also be partly the fuel, ethanol mixes are especially susceptible to water saturation. My two cents, and whatever Bill recommends.

I'm understanding that the starter is not turning over the engine. Is that correct?
Or is the starter turning engine over fine and it just does not start?
