It's on the face of the module facing down. That's what the mirror is for.

But.... There are only 3 types of modules that your car will take. STC, TRACS and regular abs. Each of them has various parts numbers, but the unit is the same. So, all you need to know is whether his says stc, Tracs, or regular abs.

$150 is steep for a used module.

Thanks!

Ya I was going to try to talk the price down to maybe $100, and ask him if he'll cover it if his used one is faulty and doesn't work on my car. He wants $350 for a rebuilt....

Hello to all, this is my first post.

I have a '95 850 turbo. The speedometer will not register above 45-50mph and will slowly return to zero once the car comes to a complete stop. As soon as I accelerate from a dead stop, the speedo will quickly move to ~50mph on the gauge, but no higher.

When I purchased the car, the speedo worked normally. I noticed this issue became gradual over a period of a few months.

I have not checked any of the pertinent sensors; speed, RPM, ABS module connector, ignition switch. I have read many of the posts here regarding these sensors, my only question is what should I check first? What order of checks should I begin with?

Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

Welcome to MVS Anthony - can you post a video or link to it on you tube of the speedo action?

That sounds strange

This link shows my Volvo 850 Turbo dash. Notice that the speedometer quickly rises to 45-50mph, yet the car is only actually traveling at 20-25mph.

This link will show the speedometer slowly return to zero mph, even though the car comes to a full stop.

Notice my other gauges work normally, as they should.

This problem came about last winter and it began gradually. Any ideas, anyone?

Part numbers.

Volvo has a habit of giving one part several different part numbers. I'll list them here.

All 96-98 FWD cars with TRACS. 850, V70, S70, C70. 9162675, 9140774 and 8602266. All of these are identical and compatible with each other.

All 96-98 FWD cars, non-tracs. 850, V70, S70, C70 9140773 and 8602265. All of these are identical and compatible with each other.

...

Only and ONLY if they are succeded. That means that old number is considered obsolete and new one replaced it.That is all well known in Volvo parts catalogue or database and there is not a single chance of mistake.
You can't say that abs/tracs abs module is compatible with non tracs abs module,if tracs doesn't work with it.It doesn't work because it have NO tracs option. Therefore,it is NOT compatible.

You can install a different part number ecu to your car.It will run...but it will NOT run properly and will have check engine light ON.
The point that it would run with it with a fault doesn't mean that it's compatible with it. ;)

You're misinterpreting what I'm saying.

A 96-98 car will accept any 96-98 module. The car doesn't not know what part it is supposed to have whether it's Tracs or not.

The same goes for 99-2000. The part numbers are not preceded, in 99 and 2000 they used all of those individual part numbers and there's no rhyme or reason as to what car received which part number. Also, the part number in the software usually doesn't even match the part number printed on the lid. You have STC, Tracs and plain abs then a load of random part numbers for each type. All of those individual part numbers for each type of abs module are all exactly the same part.

I have two cars to test modules with, a 98 and a 2000. I'm able to test all of the 96-98 units in the 98 and all of the 99-01 units in the 2000. The ecu isn't looking for a match, it's just looking for a functional compatiblel module. I've run thousands of individual modules through each car. No fried ecus and no poor engine management. If that were the case I would have been sued several thousand times by now.

Sounds like there is still an issue and this is why it keeps toggling the warning lamp.

In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.
