Hi all,
Went to start my S60 on Friday afternoon, and it made a fast clicking noise and wouldn't turn over. I jumped the car to drive to an auto zone where they tested my battery in the car... and out of it in a test cell for 30 minutes (both were successful). Then they tested my alternator, and it was reading in the 13-14 volt range. I don't know if that's good or bad. Any ideas on what to replace? I've heard the term "alternator/voltage regulator" as well, but don't know what that is...It started ok yesterday and today...the battery is 4 years old, and the alternator has not been replaced...any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks guys!

What was the amperage draw under load? Voltage means nothing without good amperage. The problem could also have been a loose or corroded cathode and/or anode, and corrected when the battery was tested.

If the batt measures 13.5 to 14.5 with engine running that means the alt and regulator are good. Check batt cable connectors for corrosion like said, clean and smear some grease on posts and connectors. Tighten snug and you're good to go. If your batt measures less than 12.6V with engine stopped that means it needs charged. You need to take long trips to have the alt charge it, otherwise you may need to put it on charger for a night.
