My 2001 S40 turbo auto was using more petrol than I thought it used to so I filled it up with 98 octane fuel and measured how far I went. It was city driving. But driving in Sydney, I wasn't stuck in traffic jams too much. Anyway, it went 357 km on 55.4L. That's 16.1 L per 100km or 14.6 mpg. That seems like an awful lot!
I can't be sure it's more than it used to consume but I think it is.
What do other people experience with similar cars?
When I get a chance to drive somewhere on a highway I'll see how much it uses in those conditions but in the meantime it be good to know if there's anything I could check on the car to make sure it's not wasting fuel.
(There's no obvious leaks or anything.)

How clean are the injectors. Do you ever run a fuel system cleaner? Poor spray pattern can be one of many causes. How dirty/clean is the air filter? Does the car have good compression? The belt could be off one timing mark causing poor performance. Fuel filter last replacement? Any trouble codes on dash?
