Engine removal 1989 240DL

Post by khalbleib »

I am going to remove the engine our of my 1989 240DL.

I have a manual, but it seems that some things are not there. It does not mention to remove the engine bolts from the transmission. Mine is a manual 4 speed. I think it would be better for me to pull engine without having to pull the transmission.

Any idea on how many bolts and any pointers, and what size are the bolts.

Also The manual says to remove the drivshaft. I do not see why I would have to do that if I am not removing the transmission.

Any help and/or pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The attached has the engine and transmission removed together which is the recommended procedure for the manual transmission cars. As for the numbers and sizes of bolts I have no reference for these.

Now I have to take one out of another vehicle with an automatic transmission. Should I take engine out by itself or with the transmission?

Please advise.

Thanks,

Kevin

I should take out the gearbox with the engine. It is much easier to split them when you have them out of the car.

In regards to pulling an engine with an automatic transmission. I will be putting the engine into a car with a manual transmission.

One question posed to me is that there is a possibility that the engine with the autotrans might not have the same fitting for the inner race bearing for the manual transmission to fit into.

Any idea if that will be the case. I would hate to pull a motor out, just to find out, I cannot use.
