On my 244GL the transmission fluid dipstick has hi and low for 40 deg C and hi and low for 90 deg C - and there's a considerable difference.
Friends (who don't have and have never had a volvo) tell me I should read the dispsticks when the engine is running. This, too, makes a considerable difference.
How am I to read it?
What does 40 deg C mean? Virtually cold, I'd guess, right?
And 90 deg C means after a good run?
And both should be measured with the engine running?
regards,
ab

To check transmission fluid it should be at operating temperature.
1. Drive the car for a few miles to bring it up to temperature.
2. With the car on a level surface move the selector through all the positions, dwelling in each one for 4 - 5 seconds. Return the selector to 'P' and allow the engine to idle for 2 minutes.
3. With the engine still running, remove the dipstick and wipe clean with a non-fluffy cloth.
4. Quckly insert the dipstick fully and remove it.
5. Check the level on the dipstick and, if necessary, top up to the Max mark. Do not overfill.
The 40 marks are for when you have drained, flushed and refilled the box. It is an initial check to ensure sufficient oil to start the engine and then check it as above.
