Yes, could be head gasket but could be something else too. Oil in water can be very elusive.
Pull head and see if the one place where oil pressure goes through gasket, the corner of block by thermostat. With head off it is the oblong hole outboard of head bolt hole on that front corner of block.
If oil pressure pushed, it could get to coolant there. I can't imagine gravity drained openings in gasket being able to go into coolant since 15 psi coolant pressure beats 0 psi of draining oil every time and that would be coolant in oil.
I would drain block and radiator. Block drain is the brass drain on back towards t belt end of motor. The with cooling system dry crank it and rev it to 2500 or so for 30 seconds. Then start dismantling everything. That brief run should pump some oil into coolant jacket somewhere that may allow it to be seen readily.

You may want to consider adding a dye to the coolant and see if it shows up in the crankcase or transmission. Jimmy is correct that the residual pressure in the cooling system will force the leak once the car is shut off.

Got it on all, but I do have a couple of follow-up questions before I rip this thing apart <G>.

Bear with me on this one. My first little problem was a slight bit of coolant leaking into cyl 5, treated with steal seal and all was/is good. It was only really leaking with residual pressure when you shut it off. Second was seeing a slight bity of oil in the coolant box, we've discussed. Third was coolant (really water with liquid detergent not coolant so a much wetter solution) leaking into the oil but only after running at low RPM with water/detergent mix. Q-is it a far stretch to think this is all a possibly deteriorating head gasket, or possible a very slightly warped head?? As an old V8 guy, this makes sense to me, but wold not be surprised if I am not even close <G>. Thoughts??

Second issue, while getting parts (all Volvo OEM complete gasket/seak kit) a couple of guys told me I absolutely HAVE to have a device that holds the cam in position so it does not get out of synch?? Cannot find one anywhere?? It makes sense with the Turbo that it cannot get out of synch, not even by a single tooth. Where can I find this tool?

I think you should have left the Steel Seal in the System. The several flushes and recent Cascade might have caused the old wound to bleed again. I know you purchased parts for the repair already but since the Steel Seal work so long maybe it would be worth another bottle to see if it fixes it again as the car has not overheated. Flush the system of Cascade very well as it is made not to foam. The complications from Surgery could be many so avoid it if possible at all cost especially for less than $100 dollars.

I am pretty sure the steel seal is still good, # 5 is not getting water intrusion. My thought process is that the gasket is just deteriorating (02 with over 100,000 miles) or the head is slightly warped due to overheating once. I see it as at least two seperate leaks, one fixed with the SS which was a coolant leak into cylinder, the second was oil into coolant and then collant into oil which I think is the same leak.

Any thoughts on the tool that holds the timing gears in place during work??

Awesome links! After talking to the tech guys at SS that is the process I used, and it worked great. Will find a test kit and do the cumbustion gas test..........thank you.

I have not done a head gasket nor timing belt for over 25 years so...
If you need to work on the Head Gasket perhaps this maybe helpful even though it is for the 850.

Oh, we did leave it in the system after the treatment. The flushes were with the cascade cleaning at this point. Any thoughts on the cam locking tool? Going ot find an exhaust gas tester today if I can find one.
