trunk lock

2002 S 40 - trunk lock handle does not open trunk. you can depress it all you want with key in any position but will not actuate trunk lock. I need to reach in trunk to safety release to unlock. Any clue to repair?

Pull out the liner, reach down and manually unlock, be happy with permanently unlocked truck or pay $500 for a new wiring harness. I chose the former.
