I still like the heat gun method best.

Oh, I meant to mention that the side door trim pieces come off in about 15 seconds each. At the trailing end of the doors there is a small T15 screw that holds the trim on. You remove that screw (be careful not to drop the screw in the door on the fronts) then slide the trim forward about an inch and it falls right off.

* dead thread revival *
Has anyone done the heat treatment, followed by Armor-All while the plastic is still warm? I'm guessing the plastic would really soak up the protectant if it is very warm.

I was told by one of the dudes at CarMax that ArmorAll is bad news, causes cracks in dashboards over time. I've sworn off it, except if i was going to spray 50/50 mix of it around the engine compartment to show it off... and they ain't show cars, and I ain't the type to do that for a sale, so I don't keep ArmorAll around anymore.

I did a coat of krylon fusion black, then a coat of fusion clear gloss on my lower windshield cowl about 2 years ago. The gloss coat gives it that 'just detailed' look all the time. Held up for 2 years so far, looks very good.

Very similar to what I did to all my trim except i rubbed it in/off with a rag so as to make it not look painted and cover the texture of the plastic. It's been about two years as well and it still looks like fresh plastic.

I didn't apply a heavy base coat of black, the texture is still apparent and visible through the clear, which is a heavier coat. I think it looks nicer than the plastic alone. Before the fusion treatment I could get it to look nice with detailing products. I was growing tired of spending time and $ for temporary effects. And that lower windscreen cowl is large and used a lot of product. The wing mirrors only need a squirt or two and a few seconds. Furthermore, the spray wax I use (Eagle1 Superior Nanowax) darkens their appearance looks good for 6 months at a time. For reasons unknown the spray wax didn't have much of an effect on the windscreen cowl. Only oily detailing sprays worked on it. But those sorts of products aren't as durable and tend to wash away in a short time.

What a great tip. Something looks a bit off when painting or using the forever black on these old bumpers, like it’s too clean and out of place. This is exactly what I was looking for.
