Cool air intake a possible way to gain horses?

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

I don't think the stock airbox is very restrictive to begin with.

Has anyone heard of using spray-on radiant barrier to cover the airbox and inlet tube?
Splitting hairs at that point. Heat in an enclosed system meaning under the hood needs to go somewhere if it is not absorbed into the Cone Filter or Stock Air Box will go into another component under the hood unless removed outside. That little bit of temp difference is negligible unless the air temp reaches a certain point that it affects the fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber. The intercooler brings the temp down but if you think about it it is also delivering it right back into the engine compartment. It is a loosing battle in that you need air movement under the hood but it is hot air from the radiator, intercooler and condensor from the AC.

PS I would stick with Stock Box as the Plastic should have a lower Specific Heat than the Metal and absorb less heat.

Here is an Independent Test that has real world numbers and achievable. Been using this product and it's transmission oil since about 1998. You'll get gain while protecting the motor. Read pages 1 and 2.

If you are going with the stock airbox anyway don't forget about K&N airfilters. They are pretty widely reviewed to make an extremely slight difference in performance, but how much can you expect from very minor mods like these?

Lol, good use of words there.

But otherwise thats about as much as you can do with the stock air intake, it's already well designed.

And not noticeable. MAYBE 1-2 hp up top... But that difference grows the more you mod your car and more of a restriction the intake becomes.

RobTarD wrote:Really though, the stock airbox flows just as well as any aftermarket intake and keeps temperatures down. IPD even has a video on their site showing differences in temperatures of the stock box and their cone filter and stock was several degrees cooler than their own setup. Is the IPD intake detrimental to performance? Probably not, but you won't see any significant increase either.

Also, ram air is mostly a myth.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. I have IPD's intake on my own car. It's a nice piece and it sounds good but that's pretty much where it stops.
Some interesting reading on the subject. Links to parts 1-4 are at the bottom of the page.

That said, every Volvo intake I've seen is very well designed with a properly sized cold air intake. The only real restriction is the HOT/COLT switching mechanism on NA cars which tends to fail on the hot side.

The stock intake in a 98 V70 XC already takes in air from in front of the radiator and I'm assuming that engine bays in the 850 series are the same. There's even a debris shield because it's likely to ingest bugs due to it's position behind the grille. There really isn't any other place to get cooler air. The debris shield comes off with one screw. There is no ram-air effect on a turbo because it compresses the intake air even if you are parked. Easiest upgrade is an aftermarket air filter element for durability w/o sacrificing airflow or reliability, next is a piping kit, followed by an intercooler upgrade.
:o The beater just won't die! So we're clawing our way back to Stage 0.
