Antenna connections, 816 Radio in a 1998 S-70

Post by Colonialgirl »

Guys,
I've got a real problem with the Radio in 1998 S-70. Its a model 816 with the CD Player and tape Player.
The problem is that the AM section goes out; It gets all scratchie/buzzie and I can't get a clear station, just occasional snatches of sound. I pulled it out and made sure the antenna was well seated, and it played okay for a bit and then quit again. Rechecked and the antenna was still firmly set.
I pulled it out today and re-installed a radio out of my 1993 850 that got totaled. (Luckily, I had the VIN and was able to call the dealer for the code)
While installing it, I discovered that there is apparently an "extra" antenna cable connection for the S-70/816 radio that doesn't have any place to plug in on the older radio. The old one plays great and gets all my stations, BUT I'd love to know what that other "antenna" connection is for. I DO have a powered antenna on the back fender and it works okay with the older radio. Is there a windshield antenna on the 1998 S-70's ? I noticed a series of little black dots that run all around both sides and across the top of the windshield with a heavier concentration behind the rear view mirror.
I'd like to have my radio with the CD/Tape player back, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Pamela

The 98s and newer have a 2nd diversity antenna.
I have the same problem with one of my cars, the AM sucks.
Everything is OK so now I have to look at the connections at the antenna amplifier (in the rear).
It may have gone bad or it's just a bad AM section of these radios, they're not great!

Also, the black dots around the fixed windows are there to reduce glare. Chances are that your radio am has gone bad. Is there still programming on AM?

Well, Now and then and sometimes so "Scratchie" you cant understand it; I have tried spitting in the back and giving it a good THUMP, but that don't seem to help. I kind of suspect its a loose solder point like happens to the ABS controllers.
Should I point out that I live down a dirt road that looks like an old fashioned wash board at times and after the rains like we had last week, it looked like the moons surface. (They did grade it yesterday, so it's "smooth" now)
