V70 Idles then dies when in "park" ETM?

We just bought a 2001 v70 station wagon with 73,000 miles on it 2 weeks ago. It was driving okay then we pulled into the gas station tonight and when I put it in park it idled for a second then died. It started right back up then did the same thing.

Everything I have read online thus far has lead me to believe it is the ETM, is this an easy fix? Wondering if anyone else has dealt with this same issue. Thanks!

I have the same issue with my '99 S70. When I crank it up, the rpms will surge up as usual, but sometimes will fall back below idle speed and it will die. Then, as I put it into park after driving, it will occasionally do the same thing. I only have this problem maybe 5 to 10% of the time. I'm not sure if yours does it much more often or if it's intermittent like mine. I have a new ETM in my car, just installed a few months ago, so I doubt it's being caused by that, but I could be wrong. Good luck, I'll certainly watch this thread and hope I can benefit from it too.

For both of the above scenarios I would suggest a thorough clean of the throttle bore, both from inlet side and reverse side before suspecting the ETM. Vacuum leaks can do the same thing.

If the ETS light is on it can still just need a clean, however if this is accompanied by throttle position CEL then the ETM is the most likely suspect.

In both cases is a check engine light on? It may well be the ETM sensor(s) but dirt in the throttle housing bore can give you some very nasty idle situations.

It is not too hard to replace the sensor (though harder to find a regular source of supply) I've replaced 2 of them myself and the ETMs are working fine.

There was Yehuda (Matthews forum member) selling them from Jerusalem and now another guy from the UK. If you're going to tackle it yourself I'd say take things very slowly as you can't buy any parts for these separately.

I don't want to hijack someone else's thread here, so hopefully we are having the same issue. If it starts to sound different I'll gladly stop posting on this one and start my own. My car doesn't giving any check engine lights or anything. If my car doesn't die on either the initial rev of the engine at startup or when I put it back into park to shut it off, then it's fine. It only happens in park and only in those instances.

I'll look at cleaning the throttle bore, if I can figure out how to do it. :) thanks for the help

Hi all, Medeiros23 is my wife and I thought I'd chime in. The ETS light is on,( I think it's the ets light it's the triangle shaped light in the center of the dash box.) it seems to only shut itself off only when in park (at least for now). It does however intermittently idle strangely when stopped. I can't seem to locate where the etm is on this model though. I THINK I've located it but I'm not sure. I'm gonna go purchase a chilton guide for this model(s) and try and locate it that way.

If you are a non-turbo it's easy. It's a large rectangular metal box on the end of the inlet tubing from the aircleaner which is bolted with 4 bolts to the right of the inlet manifold. You can have one off in 10 minutes on a non-turbo car.

NA Removal (terrible quality) :

Turbo Removal:

On turbos it's UNDER the inlet manifold and gets fed from a large intercooler pipe.

You don't have to unplug it to clean it, however if it hasn't been previously removed the wiring will be routed behind the starter making removal/cleaning more challenging as you won't have any slack left in the wiring.

Last year my v70 2.4t was doing almost the same thing had some real nasty idle situations out of it bad fuel milage some shutdowns etc, I found that doing the bore cleaning , maf sensor, helped.however there was a crack in the intake tube where a sensor pluged in. The sensor that had the crack in it is the sensor that is just above the tranny dipstick my guess is that it breaks cracks whatever when the tranny dipstick is pulled out because there is not enough room for you to get your hand in and out of that space so check the intake tube too they are not too expensive to buy and replace considering the fuel mileage you are losing.
