2001 V70 2.4T engine missing

Post by willie83 »

Hi all,

My 2001 V70 2.4T started missing (jerky) as I am accelerating uphill. It will do it somewhat on a flat surface if I floor it, but is much worse when I am going uphill. I took it in to an AAMCO to have the trans checked out, and they couldn't find any problem. I have had all of the engine mounts checked and the bad ones replaced. I then cleaned the MAF, but still have the problem. It runs just great accept under heavy acceleration. Any thoughts? What should I check next. Thanks

Forgot to mention there are no codes.

From your description have you looked at the fuel system. How is the fuel pressure? How many miles on the fuel filter?

Also the air intake is it free of obstructions? As an exemple a clogged air filter.

But do not exclude a failing MAF because sometimes it isn't giving codes.

Thanks DGM. The car has about 140,000 on it. Fuel filter was one of my first thoughts, but I read that the filter is built into the pump and not really replaceable. How does one go about checking the fuel pressure?

How To Check The Fuel Pressure On A Volvo

Rent or borrow a Gauge from O'Reilly's or AutoZone and you will not have to remove the insides of the Schrader Valve

Your model should have a separate filter. Look underneath on the right side near the rear wheel.

The pressure would be around 55 psi. A bit higher than the S70 series.

My understanding is that the steal tank gets the design where the filter is integrated with the pump.

If you have a problem with the pump be aware of this recall in the southern states. Little cracks on the fuel pump flange may generate fuel smells in the car. Verify with your local dealer if your vehicule is covered.

That's good news! I took a look underneath and the filter is there, and it looks like it could be the original.

Well, it definitely isn't the fuel pressure. Had a solid and steady 55 PSI at full acceleration. Off to get MAF cleaner. I don't think I really did a thorough job cleaning it the first time around. I used carb and choke cleaner and only used a little because I wasn't entirely comfortable using the C & C cleaner.

It finally threw me a code! P0305, misfire cylinder 5. The check engine light just flashed 3 or 4 times then went off.

Funny thing is, it idles and drives very smooth until you really hit the gas under load. Could it be just the insulator, or likely a coil?

I am also down about 2 MPG from normal.

As you said it could be a coil or its insulation in the tunnel (little cracks on the ends). Look also at the spark plug. How old are they?

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =9&t=27232

The spark plug tunnels and overhead gallery can be coated of oil. If it is your case it would be an indication of a clogged PCV. Before check the oil cap gasket but most of the time it is the PCV.

Thanks for all your help DGM. When you mentioned the PCV I cringed a little. Looks like a bit of a pain to change.

I am now getting a little rough idle right when I start the car, then hear a little click, and it runs perfectly. I still have the miss and lack of power at full throttle under load, but just normal driving around it is OK.

I tried the balloon test on the dipstick tube and it didn't have any vacuum, and stood the balloon up ever so slightly. PCV?
