Turn signals, speedometer inoperative, gear shift locked

Post by jtgalloway »

I have an intermitent problem. When I turn on the car, the gearshift won't unlock. I use the override to release the gearshift and get the car in gear. At the same time, the turn signals and speedometer are inoperative.

The rest of the time, if the gearshift unlocks automatically, the speedometer and turn signals will work. Some times I have to stop and start the car several times to get it to reset.

Any ideas?

Try to jiggle the key around and see if the behaviour changes. It sounds like a bad electrical portion of the ignition switch.

Fortunately it is a very easy fix and it is relatively cheap for the part in Volvo terms.

+1 on the ignition switch - had all of the exact same symptoms.

Everything started working normally when I cleaned the corrosion off of the positive battery terminal.
