B230F Turbo vs Non-Turbo

Post by e777 »

After having owned a couple of 740s with the B230F engine, I was considering buying a '91 740 turbo sedan (140K miles). I know the durability of the B230F is legendary, bu I have no idea if the B230FT has a different reputation. Also, does the turbo unit itself tend to be high or low maintenance?

Thanks!

I have two 1989 740 Turbo cars in my household. My and my son's. We had a 1990 740GLE until my son smashed it up, replaced it with 740 Turbo. These cars are solid and reliable.

Things that you will see:
1/ More power
2/ Gass mileage between 20 to 24 mpg on highway/semi rural areas, I have no actual stop and go city numbers..
3/ Yuo MUST allow the turbo to cool off at the end of the trip = gentle drive for last mile and 30 seconds of idle before shut off. I learned the hard way, I had to rebuild my Turbo.
4/ The Turbo has untiroll bars front and back, the front bar is thicker, so ou get better handling...
5/ I you believe in NOT replacing oil, you will kill the turbo in no time.
6/ After the first 5 years, the 740 became my daily driver, considering that I live in NE with snow and salt on teh road, there is no visivble rust on the outside, from under the car, at some of the sheet metal joints the undercoating is just starting to crack - not too many cars "live this long" in thi area, my 2003 Ford has progressed significantly more with rust ...

As far as reliability, the Turbo model is the same car as the others 740s sharing practicaly all parts...
And all of the 740s/940 will need new ball joints in around 130k miles, give or take.. I had to replace them on both of my cars. It starts with a clunking noise from the front when going over a bump.
Also on all of these the front struts and rear shocks need replacement around 120k to 150k miles - in hind sight I shoudl have done the struts when I did the ball joints. However doing the ball joints proved that the clunking is the ball joint, I found all kind of contradictory information on this topic.

I hope this helps, good luck.
