Engine Oil Warning Light?? Oil Pick-Up Tube ???

Hello,

My daughter has a 2001 S80 w/70Kmiles. It's been a great car, save the throttle problem she had fixed last fall. (dealer covered the fix)

Last Wednesday she bumped into a ladys rear bumper. It did no damage to the S80, but put three small dents on the ladys bumper.

Later that day, her oil light would flash on, for a few seconds, at low throttle. She checked her oil quantity and it was between the full and add.

Oil was clean with no bad smell.

Also, while driving, she checked her dash oil press. gauge and it did not show low oil pressure as the light would come on. Only the oil pressure warning light flickered.

The next day, the oil light came on again during low throttle, on her way to work. Again, the gauge did not reflect a low oil pressure condition. As she accelerated, it would go out.

As she was turning into the parking lot at work, the engine stalled and she got a terrible smell. She restarted the car and parked it 50 feet inside the lot. She could not tell me if the smell was oil or anti freeze.

The car was towed to the dealer!. The dealer says it is the O-rings on the oil pick-up tube. $700.00 bucks to drop the oil pan and replace a .50 cent O-ring. He said the oil was cavitating due to an air leak by the O-ring. I'm very skeptical!! Also, he wants $153.00 for upper motor mount replacement and $70.00 bucks for engine coolant replacement.

I have overhauled Ford, Chevy, Dodge, VW, and aircraft engines, but I've never been into a Volvo motor. I've never seen a problem with an oil pick-up tube!

Can anyone tell me if the oil pick-up tube on the Volvo even has an O-ring.

I think this dealer is trying to get to my daughter for $1000.00 bucks.

Also, any ideas on the oil light flickering problem.

I have not looked at the car yet, but I plan to visit the dealer tomorrow.
