Oil Leaking Out Of Filler Cap 98 V70

Hey- This is my first Volvo, a 98' V70 2.4 Turbo. I'm a pretty good mechanic but am not familiar with Volvo's design, heard they are good cars. Anyway, oil is leaking, actually being pushed out of my oil filer cap. I would guess that there is a problem with the PCV or crankcase breather. I looked at the engine but it all looks very different to methan most cars I've owned. I hear there is a whole PCV System, not just a valve, that has to be serviced and it's a big job. Anybody got any advice? I'm gonna try tgo figure it out myself as usual. Thanks!

JRL is right. Some just buy the gasket for the oil filler cap but that doesn't work for everyone. Buying a new cap altogether is the solution and will stop that oil from being pushed out on top of the engine. However, if you haven't had the pcv system cleaned (including the oil separator or oil trap under the intake manifold) you really should do this by 100K miles as this may be one of the reasons for the excessive pressure. So I was talking to JRL last week about buying my 98 V70 because it was smoking and sputtering and I didn't trust it for my son to take to college. Because I need to look around for a new used car and I couldn't trade it or sell it to JRL or anyone in that condition, I had the pcv system replaced. Bought the kit and gave it to my mechanic. Everything got done. Runs 100% better. He said there were broken lines and loads of carbon and sludge where the box attaches to the motor. Cleaned everything out. Now I have a oil leak! About a 3" stain after parking for 10 minutes. I drove it to his college in North Jersey and he drove it back yesterday. About 250 miles total. Still shows nearly full on the dipstick. I do notice a little seepage around oil filler hole. I cleaned everything up and the gasket seems brittle. I was going to flip the gasket around, but it seems like it will break. I will replace the cap today, but is that just a coincidence with the pcv system being replaced. I don't think it was leaking prior. I'm going to take it back tomorrow to the mechanic but time is of the essence because my son needs to get back tomorrow.

A leaky oil cap will not produce a large enough leak to make 3" stains, something else is going on with the oil leak. The gasket should be soft pliable rubber. Definitely needs replacing, maybe just a gasket would do the job as stated above you never know until you try.

And I can't think of any obvious or common reason why an oil leak would show up after a PCV job. So perhaps just coincidence. You just need to trace the leak back to its origin. Standard method is to clean up as much of the engine area as possible, then find the highest area of freshly leaking oil. Hopefully it is not the rear main seal (RMS). Was the oil changed? Maybe the oil filter didn't get tightened properly (best case scenario)?

Take a look at the turbo charger oil return pipe where it goes back in to the sump, these are known to leak - Mike
