Is that car a turbo? If so, it could be the turbo compressor wheel or flywheel grinding. Or not. Totally just a guess.

Sounds to me like it's in time with a cylinder.

As to what it is, I don't know. Doesn't sound like a valve, but the timing is right for it to be a valve rather than a piston ring, and the knock isn't deep enough to be a rod.

J_cd....it's a nonturbo....Jason Dunn....Is this a guess or are you sure?

To all it's frustrating because I don't know what it is...and even my dad as being a mechanic doesn't know what it is....The car runs fine...I notice at time the exhaust gets really smokey (white smoke) and the noise comes and goes....at idle you don't hear it...but when you rev the engine up that's when it rattles...so frustrating.

I have a '96 855 turbo that has your noise amplified. I don't hear it inside the car while driving, unless I have a window open and pass by something stationary. But with the hood up it's quite loud. I've run it by half a dozen mechanics and no one can identify it. Several have said as jblackburn did, it doesn't sound like a rod or main bearing knock which would be much deeper. It's more clinky rather than poundy. Jimmy57 speculated from my description that it might be a piston crown pecking at a valve edge ( I think that's what he said), which sounds more realistic.

I know one cylinder has 30% lower compression than the others, which could implicate a valve issue. Have you checked your compression?

JimBee....That is very close to what mine does....No I haven't checked the compression....How do I do that, and if it is the compression...what am I supposed to fix?

Try listening from under the front passengers side. I've heard some old air conditioning compressors make a similar noise when the clutch is worn or acting up. (not necessarily Volvo) Turn the air on and off and listen both ways.
It's something to try.
Good Luck.

Ben850....I will try that as well and see...It' funny you say that...cause the way I see it...if it was the engine the car would have been done broke down by now...this noise has been getting progressively worse for about a year...I will check that and see.
